Forgot to renew my season ticket

Hi wondering if anyone knows what usually happens in situations where you travelled in the morning but forgot to renew your season? I commuted into Blackfriars this morning but my ticket ran out on 28 Feb and I was off yesterday getting my car serviced and then just forgot it needed renewing this morning.
I did forget to renew once before a few years ago and the guy at the station just said to go and buy a season now and that was that. But this time I said it to the guys at the gate as soon as I realised, then some guy reads me my rights and makes me a sign a declaration, it seemed completely over the the top and now apparently they will write to me?
So, do you think they'll fine me or will they accept it as an honest mistake?
Cheers.

I'd expect that you will receive a penalty fare for travelling without a valid ticket, and why not, you're bang to rights? Hopefully you have now renewed your season ticket, and I'd guess that taken as a percentage of the annual cost the penalty will be a fairly small amount that you can use as a lesson to remind yourself in future to renew on time.0

Thanks for your patronising answer pal.
I mean, I've only handed them the best part of £20k over the past 5 years to run a train service whenever they feel like, but obviously expecting to be treated in a sensible manner for making a minor error is apparently unreasonable.0 -

Welcome to modern Britain.
Yet another reason to vote for a government rather different from the present lot.0 -
Unfortunately the ticket inspectors don't know that you've bought season tickets for the last five years, they jsut see that on Wednesday someone is trying to go through a barrier without a ticket and that means you get a penalty fare.
You could try appealing it, but the ticket inspector isn't doing anything wrong if they issue a penalty fare.0 -

Not quite true here since he thumbed through over a year's worth of season tickets that were in my ticket wallet when I handed it to him.
Anyway, it must happen all the time and my past experience has been that they just ask you to go and buy your ticket now and that's it. I mean, I don't fine them every time my train is late, which is just about every single day of the year0 -

You used the service without a valid ticket, therefore breaking the t & c's of the train company.
As stated above, no one checking or being told by you knows {or cares} if you paid £20k or any other figure you state so just pay up and next time {whatever else is going on in your world} take some time to buy your ticket that way you will not for a possible THIRD time have this situation0 -

Nothing to do with "taking time to buy my ticket", I simply forgot, as people sometimes do.0
