Getting a default overturned

Options
Hello

I wonder if anyone can share any of their experiences of give any advice please. In Feb I got a letter from Barclaycard saying I needed to make a payment before 24th Feb or they might register a default etc. Stupidly in my mind I read this as 'by' 24th and during Feb I begged and borrowed and together with some of my salary on payday I paid the amount due - ON 24th by debit card. Yesterday I got a letter from them saying they had registered a default. The letter was dated 24th and I assume is automatically issued. I was shocked as I was certain I had until 24th but when I looked back I then noticed it was 'by' 24th. My fault I know. Does anyone know whether Barclaycard might be sympathatic and undue the default and how I might go about asking them?

Thanks

It's a difficult one! You must of been in arrears for some time for it to get to this stage. I think your only option is to ask them to remove it as a gesture of goodwill. Depending on the debt owed and the amount that was paid it could be unlikely thy will remove it unfortunatly.

Thanks for your response. I know its asking quite a bit. The debt is about £5,800 and I needed to pay £441 (which I did). It has been going on a while of course and Barclaycard are actually very fair when you owe them money. It is just hugely punitive (6 years now) for what is technically (not withstanding the overall lateness on the account) one day after they demanded it

I think you may well of ended up with a default either way if you paid it on the 24th. It takes 2 or 3 days for funds to clear on to my credit cards.
The information they have provided to the CRA's is unfortunatly for you is accurate and you will probably struggle to have it removed. It's certainly worth a try though.
  • Thank you. I have written to them and explained my circumstances (everyone has excuses I have circumstances and excuses) and acknowledged my mistake and asked if they would consider reversing it. I will let people know how I get on. Barclaycard are actually very good with financial difficulty but as you say late is late and the CRA is an accurate reflection of fact

I dont think the issue is actually splitting hairs about on or before the date.

A debit card payment will take typically a couple of days to be counted as on the account, even if you do it logged in to your Barclaycard account. Sending it as Faster Payments from your bank account usually takes a few minutes to a couple of hours, but isn't guaranteed for the same day.

Ring them up and say you didn't realise that about the debit card, and ask them to remove the default on a goodwill basis.

And remember it for the future. For instance at the very latest do FP the evening before the due date. And don't count weekend days, if you're doing debit card.
