Something to check if you use a comparison website

A couple of months ago I renewed my household insurance. As usual I checked out the market on the comparison websites and looked at those companies who don't play that game. I really liked the policy I had since, although it cost a little more, it had unlimited cover which saved a lot of work estimating the value of my growing piles of "stuff" (one benefit was that I no longer needed expensive extra cover on one particularly valuable item).
Anyway, I found (surprise, surprise) that all the quotes were a lot cheaper - including from my existing insurer. I then asked for another quote on my existing insurers own website, which was even cheaper than the comparison website. Why? Well, my guess is that since the comparison websites have to ask a lot of questions to cover all the bases of the insurance companies they serve and supply all of that information back, the insurance companies will use all that data, including stuff that don't bother asking on their own websites and come up with a different (and in my case more expensive) answer.
So, I cancelled my policy and took out an identical policy with the same company and saved hundreds of pounds. Bonkers! What's more they even sent me some vouchers, which made the effective cost even less.
The moral of this story is - continue to use comparison sites and the few independents but then also ask for direct quotes from the the top two or three companies you find on the comparison sites.
