Amazon Phishing Scam

Probably been mentioned on here before but my daughter got an email yesterday along the lines of "Thanks for your order etc" looked reasonably legit (had order number and details of some items that had been "ordered" - there was a link to click if you did not want the items and wanted to claim a refund. The link wanted you to complete refund details: name, address, card number etc. (!) Luckily she has no cards (account set up to use her gift vouchers). She phoned Amazon who confirmed there had been no orders on her account, changed the account password for her and advised her to delete the email.

If in doubt - phone Amazon - and get their number from their website not from the email!

Hope this helps others.

  • The easiest way is to not open any amazon emails whatsoever. All my amazon emails go straight to junk folder.

Use your amazon account to keep track of orders.

Amazon don't help themselves (their customers) to avoid phishing as they don't include any specific customer details in their order acknowledgement etc. emails. An example of one of mine is:
    Order Confirmation
    Order #XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXXXX
    Hello,
Thanks for your order. We’ll let you know once your item(s) have dispatched. Your estimated delivery date is indicated below. You can view the status of your order or make changes to it by visiting Your Orders on Amazon.co.uk.

The only such email that includes any customer detail (e.g. my name) is the order update email saying the goods are out for delivery. if they can do it for that one, why can't they do it for the others?

I had something similar from 'Paypal' . It was sent twice and gave the name of a person and the amount they were processing to pay him.

As I knew I didn't use Paypal, I just ignored and deleted both. (There was a link to cancel the deal; ie there was trap to garner your personal details).
