Garage removal re: neighbours rights

Hi
I live in a detached property which has a driveway to the side and a garage at the end of it ( in the back garden). The neighbours have an extension which overlaps the garage by 2ft with a 6" gap between the garage and their extension, which is linked by a fence post (just to cover the gap)
In essence, the neighbour is utilising 6" of my garden and their decking butts up to the garage wall (which is fine at the moment), however, we would like to get rid of the garage completely and erect a fence between the gardens, but this would mean the decking already in situ would need to be chopped back 6" so the boundary line was as it should be.
Responsibility for the boundary is my neighbours although, we are prepared to pay for the fence.
Is it within our rights to ask the neighbour to chop his decking so a fence can be erected?
Thanks

Yes. Their decking is partly on your land.0

Maybe.... If the garage has been there for 12 years or more, they could claim adverse possession over the strip of land.
The first step would be an informal chat with the neighbour, tell him/her what you intend to do regarding the garage, and take it from there.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Talk to your neighbours and try your best not to get into a feud before you do anything else - wars have started over scraps of land.0

Are there any supports for the decking on your land? Or just the deck to trim back? The later is an easy to sort the former more of an issue.0
