I want my house to smell nicer!

Perhaps a strange thing to ask, but I love when I walk in to somewhere and smell the disinfectant that they have used to clean their floor, for example.
I had one of those annoying air freshener jobbies which had a sensor and squirted as you can past it. But it just smelt artificial and not very nice.
I do keep the place clean, we have birds which get cleaned out regularly and don't smell too bad.
I want to walk into my house and smell clean pine or something. Is that weird?
How do I achieve this without having to spray with air freshener?
Due to eczema, we don't even get clean washing smell as I can't use things with perfume.
I got new star drops yesterday as I had run out, and it is pine-scented and I just want to make up a spray and spray everywhere!

I find apple-scented jars of Yankee candles work really well.

For Every Body soy candles also have a similar-smelling real apple scent rather than that bitter fake apple smell that a lot of cheaper candles have.

Same goes for clean laundry-scented ones.

Yankee also do plug-in versions. I know they aren't the cheapest but you can find them a bit cheaper online at times and I feel with candles you really do get what you pay for!

I find that I can smell new stuff (good or bad!) for the first week or so, then I get used to it and can't smell it any more. You could try having a few different scents of the same products and swap them around when you can't smell them any longer.

Other than cleaning everything with highly scented products every day, you could try loo cleaner - at least that's kind of normal to use daily! I use Ecover and it smells quite nice - very clean but not bleachy. We have a fairly small 3 bed house but if I leave the bathroom door open I can smell that all over the upstairs.

I quite agree! I used to be a volunteer cleaner at an Eco-friendly company and this stuff smelled amazing (it contains orange oil):

  • If you have a garden you could plant some dwarf firs and cut twigs for the lovely resin smell. Or take regular walks in nearby woodland with scissors?

I don't bother with perfumed washing powder/fabric softener- fresh washing smells nice as it is, especially if dried in the sun.

Put a jumper on and keep your windows open; my upstairs ones are open at least a crack all day, all year round. I really notice how stuffy other people's houses are with the windows shut and central heating on full volume.

If I had my way I'd have plug in air fresheners both upstairs and down because I'm paranoid about the house smelling of dogs but they make hubby sneeze so I like to open the windows regularly to get a fresh flow of air through the house.

    I am a window opener!
I got some gel strip things for the loo so the bathrooms do smell nice, just not the rest of the house.
If I dilute cleaning stuff according to the instructions, then the smell doesn't linger.

I too am a great believer of fresh air and nothing to me smells nicer than a house that is well-aired.Plus of course its free which is another added bunus I don't want my house to smell of ylang-ylang dunno what it even is .at the most a nice bowl of hyacinths or a vase of fresia makes the house smell very nice and spring like I used to have some night-scented stock outside my kitchen window before I had a conservatory built on and the smell of those on a summer night was gorgeous

I agree with this; bedlinen smells totally different, much nicer, if I've been able to dry it outdoors.
I don't use perfumed powder or fabric conditioner because Mr LW says he doesn't want his clothes smelling "girly" (his word).

We do use a fair bit of incense in our bungalow - mainly for rituals, but it does have the knock-on effect of making the place smell nice. I currently have some called Dragons Blood, which is really lovely.

Another one for fresh air - my brother used to moan at me when we were younger for always having my bedroom window open. 'Is it fresh air fortnight?' he'd ask!

I've just come back home from work, it's a beautiful bright sunny but cold day and I've got the front door open. It's south facing so the cold sun is streaming in. I've put another layer of clothes. Once the sun moves away round the house I'll close the door and light the woodburner.

Can't abide these air freshener, squirty things, loo stuff, just makes me headachy and want to gag. Can't even use anything for the loo as there's a septic tank here.

Fresh air... smells the best, even when the sillage is being spread in my field!
