Purchased mattress-not delievred

Could someone in the know please advise of the best way forward in this situation.
Back in January I purchased a mattress for a relative online, at the time of buying it was stated that the 'model' of that specific mattress is out of stock and would be back and ready for dispatch within 21 days.
The only email that'd been received from the company was on the day that the order was placed. At one point I went on web-chat and made enquirers about the dispatch situation and was reassured that everything was in order and that I'd should expect an update within days.
It's been over a month and there been no update or attempt to dispatch.
I'd just checked their website and they have 10+ mattresses in-stock.
How do I go about complaining effectively ? The inconvenience which was caused from their oversight was tremendous for the frail person it was brought for.
Could customer have the order delivered and complain upon receiving the item? In that the service caused a deterioration of psychical state as the customer is in his mid-90's.
The reason i'm hesitant to report the various issues to the company prior to receiving the item --is due to concerns about receiving a "returned" /used/ect mattress. As I have a great deal more negative to add about their service, not keen to jack it all in and go down a full reimbursement route - as we feel that out wait should be reflected in the costs.
