Old Monument credit card sent me a cheque out of the blue

New on here so not sure if I'm posting this in right place... I had an old Monument credit card back around 2004, was really irresponsible back then and didn't pay I think the credit limit was £1000.
I'd forgotten all about it, don't remember receiving correspondence, certainly for the last 10 years or so... Then last week I received a cheque for £3600, the accompanying letter starts "further to our correspondence...."
The cheque is made to my maiden name. I'm not sure what to do, or why they have sent it. If I claim the cheque would this be seen as acknowledgement of this old account, and if so I'm concerned that for all these years I have been accumulating interest and I will be stung for a huge debit... But then again why would they send me a cheque for far more than they ever received in payments from me?
