Best holiday travel insurance

Hello everyone,

I am going to Crete for 10 nights in June with my partner who is epileptic. He has had a couple of fits recently and has finally been referred back to the hospital in April. They have upped his medication which seems to be doing well. My question is, what is the best travel insurance I can get with his medical condition? I myself have no medical conditions.

Thank you in advance for your help,
Sophie.

Most insurance won't cover a condition that your are currently awaiting hospital treatment or appointment for

  • Ok so this linked post is not the same in terms of condition or prognosis. BUT, to be honest the same listed solutions will be relevant.

One issue which I think you grasp is that recent changes in condition and medication will increase the perception of risk. You may find given the timing that until he has had those tests and everything appears more stable, not all insurers will quote.

If you can - and hindsight is easy I know - buy your policy as soon as you book your trip. So cancellation cover is available. It may be you have to buy without cancellation cover.

    Good luck.

  • Thanks for the response guys. He is already diagnosed and has been for about 12 years. He's just being referred to the hospital to see if his medication needs changing to something more suitable. The trip is already booked I just wanted to get the insurance sorted as soon as possible.
  • Understood.

If you can buy a policy now - great.

It is not the length of time since diagnosis that will pose any issue, but the possible changing situations and need for different medication that insurers may see as uncertain. They like "of course" stable well controlled conditions with no recent events or changes to treatment ...

The same issue would apply if he had just been diagnosed as treatment could not show a long history of controlling his condition.

Call them / go online - but take care for any exclusion / declaration about any change in treatment (= medicines for him) that has occurred or if it is ongoing.

Try Insure & Go. If you declare epilepsy, they will ask how many seizures/hospital admissions he has had in the past few weeks or 6 months. I know that because I have to declare the condition but I am seizure free so don't know how much a positive answer will affect the premium.
Alternatively google Epilepsy Action which has a policy for travellers with active epilepsy. I have never actually tried their one but they used to liaise with Insure & Go.

They work with InsuranceWith now. But logically given the partnership, they should be a little more accommodating even if pricing is not the lowest. EA do get commission though.
