Lola, give up the smokes for a start,
and that will net you almost £2,500 a year to save... :)
If only OP had already thought of that....
I've took steps to try fix this. Stopped buying wine and smoking as I was spending £200 a month on cigarettes.
  • My favourite reply yet! I wish I could feed my cats cheaper food however it's prescription food as one decided to throw a sicky and nearly die so he's on it for maintenance now.

I've got a spending diary and i'm sticking to my budget cap so won't go outside it I still have £290 left yay! I'm trying my best not to spend every day too!

    Thank you!!!!:j

Making steps to cut out drinking and smoking was a good choice and will benefit your health as well as your bank balance.

Could you maybe look back at saving more money though? Cut back on your weekly shopping bill and only buy essentials, cut back on eating takeaways if you do this at times. And actually depositing what you end up saving, into a savings account, maybe even look at getting a regular saver in which are harder to withdraw from? But aside from this, work on getting your debts paid off too, because when they're out of the way then you can turn over a new leaf.

Put aside money for your spend, so if you have a phone contract, know that you have to keep that money for that, same with your rent and other outgoings. And if you cut back on some of the other spending, you'll have some money left over to save :)

The good news is that although you've been "winging it all your life" so have most 23 year olds - you have plenty of time to put your life onto a course that will make you happy and hopefully financially well off.

You've answered your own question though. Turn your lifestyle around so that you are earning £1850 and spending £1600 rather than the other way around. Either take on another job, find a different job, get a pay rise, work more hours, and at the same time cut down on outgoings.

It's simple, but not easy. If you can give up smoking that not only saves a fortune but also shows you have the self control to do other simple but not easy changes. For example do you have a flash £700 phone? Or a £35 pcm phone contract? Go to 3 and get a cheaper contract ....etc.
