I will be moving the some of the contents of our house overseas (within the EU) In order to save money, I am hiring a van and driving the goods myself. However, I had intended to insure the contents against theft as the goods will be left in the Van overnight. I am not interested in insuring against accidental damage etc - I am prepared to cover these risks myself. My biggest concern is if someone steals the van with everything in while it is parked overnight.

Does anyone know of any company willing to insure against this risk? Internet searches have so far failed.

Same issue if the van turns over in high winds or you fall asleep at wheel and crash. Who is going to pay out?

Household insurance policies will not normally cover goods in transit unless moved by a professional firm of movers. DIY and man and van type jobs are simply not covered.

Are you moving in connection with work, i.e. because your employer has asked you to? You could ask them to speak to their insurance broker and ask for GIT cover (goods in transit) on a one off basis. They will need to know destination and type / value of contents. This is simply "personal chattels / belongings - £30k" or whatever.

If you are in the armed forces, I believe they have a scheme for service personel that includes GIT cover.
