Refelting a shed roof

Just had a quote for the refelting of a shed. Pitched room, about 16ft by 6ft. 3 rolls of bitumen felt that requires torching one side to stick it on then nailing it into place.

Quote of £280.

Reasonable?

  • Sounds expensive.
  • You're looking at something like £50 or £60 tops for the felt - for example : http://www.wickes.co.uk/Iko-Black-Shed-Felt-10-x-1m/p/112812

( just picked that at random, basic shed felt is easily available from any DIY shed - so to speak LOL )

It's no more than a day's work. I'd say that's a tad on the expensive side, but obviously depends on the going rate for labour in your area.

It's not a particularly difficult DIY job if you're so inclined ...
  • Read the reviews on the link Ebe gives, especially the third one down!

One shed we bought (a cheapie) came with very thin felt, it was useless, I always use the heavy green mineral felt like http://www.wickes.co.uk/Iko-Green-Ultra-Durable-Super-Shed-Felt-8-x-1m/p/164067. More expensive, but worth it in the long term, my workshop roof is still fine 9 years after we felted the roof! Use something like http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Brush-Applied-Roofing-Felt-Adhesive-2-5L/p/240008 for the overlaps, as well as galvanised clout nails.

No. You could do it yourself for much less. A friend had a quote for her 3mx2m shed roof of £350 which was silly, I did it for her for £21 for a roll of felt, about £6 for a kg of clout nails, and £10 for a tin of bitumen paint. Took just an afternoon to do.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.
  • Why bother with felt when you can use epdm rubber fit it once and forget about it forever..It comes in one piece no leaks or joins easy to fit even I have fitted it to my shed https://www.rubber4roofs.co.uk
would be about £90 for your size roof

    I agree with Smudger above.

I recovered the roof of an 8 x 6 shed with EPDM a few years ago.

The EPDM and adhesive cost me about £70 and only took a few hours to fit.

Four years later it still looks like new.

Traditional felt would probably have failed by now as the shed gets a lot of sun.
  • How do you finish it off on a pitched shed roof?

i just refitted the wooden battens on the bottom edge or you can use the trims that the epdm company sell
you apply the white glue stuff onto the shed roof so its going nowhere anyway

http://www.permaroof.co.uk/shed-roof-kit there is a video here showing you just how easy it can be

I haven't got the time at the moment to do it myself and to be honest, with all the rain at the moment, I really CBA so thought I would get someone in. If in everyones opinion that is too much I look at other quotes.

I would be tempted to call a general handyman/woman in. They might not charge the premium the roofer is obviously charging.
