Buying car without v5c

Am I right in thinking that there is currently no 100% sure way of telling if a car has a logbook loan or not?If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0

Unless somethings changed then no. Bit silly for a loan company not to register an interest though. Nothing to stop the owner applying for a new V5C and selling it very quickly.
OP says the seller is keen for a quick sale.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Just had a talk with the guy. He's not willing to hold the car for me, he want to sell it asap (which is understandable). I told him that no matter what he says him paying tax on it while I drive it would be wrong and not add up.
I told him that if the car is still there when he gets the replacement papers i'll be happy to get the car, otherwise I will unfortunately have to decline.
Did he say why he's in such a rush to sell it? I think you did the right thing anyway, so sale until you've got the V5 in your hand, and he's going to struggle to sell it to anyone else anyway.
It sounds fishy that he's had it so long without correcting the details, and is trying to sell it at a reduced price (because no-one is going to offer him market rate without the V5) now instead of waiting 2 weeks.
In all honesty, unless it's a rare car or bargain you're probably best just looking for a different one, and save yourself the worry.0 -
Bought a car last year on the Monday afternoon, seller did it online and the new V5C arrived on Wednesday morning.
I made sure they had the V5C and checked it over as well though. It could be a write off also.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Its not a case of might get ripped off. Its pretty much certain. Sounds like a logbook loan and they are behind on the payments so got a letter saying the bailiffs are coming to get the car.
Log book loans dont always show on checks but i am pretty sure a proper HPI now covers you for losses if it is later found to have a logbook loan on it.0 -
I see little or no reason to buy a car without a V5. Something rare and special / classic would worry me even more.
IE An old escort with No V5 ,who is to say the car ID has not been sold.
