international cheque cannot be cashed

I bank with nationwide who unfortunately won't let me cash a cheque for $500 (USD).
I have thought about opening another bank account as a backup (Nationwide have randomly blocked my card twice due to "returned mail") but have no idea what to go for that will benefit me the most as I do not want to switch.
A lady in Santander told me every other bank will let me cash the international cheque.
Any tips or ideas!?

Surprisingly nationwide don't accept foreign cheques anymore.

Most banks will offer accounts that will do what you want.

By far the best option will be to get whoever wrote the cheque to send the money as an electronic payment instead, cheaper and quicker all round (and I'm pretty sure it will be accepted by Nationwide). You will be charged for paying in a USD cheque wherever you open an account, and if it is sent for collection it's going to take several weeks at least before you get the money.
