Still need 6 mths left on passport?

Am I right in thinking this is still the case? if so why?
We are money saving to save for a holiday to visit family and friends in New Zealand next year, but have just looked at our passports and out of the 4 of us 3 will need new ones if they have to be valid 6 mths after our return date, which will be a big expense for nothing.
Also if I do need to renew will the extra be added on, ie 10 years and say 9mths? what about the kids ones?

You will need to renew passports and no the extra will not be added ontravelover0

Hi - you can apply up to 9 months before expiry and this will be credited on the new passport.This is confirmed by their website under "renewals" (https://www.passport.gov.uk).
