Bit of a strange one this. I have an older Vaio laptop that has a keyboard not displaying the right character when typing. They're all there but represented by different keys. I have tried changing the zone on the settings.usa to uk etc.. but has not helped.
Windows is up to date,so any ideas on where i could look next to solve the issue?
Cant find much of a fix online
Thanks as usual

So is it a UK QWERTY keyboard that's showing wrong characters or a non UK QWERTZ keyboard ?

It'll be the Keyboard settings most likely. My laptop at home is set to UK in the regional settings but USA keyboard (as it has a USA layout keyboard).

    (On a UK keyboard ... Shift 2 = " but on a USA keyboard it = @ for example).

  • Hi,

you say you've tried changing the zone, but did you click on Keyboard tab and make sure it was UK also?

How about some examples of which keys (on the keyboard) produce which characters on the screen? And is it consistent or intermittent (which might indicate a connection/hardware fault rather than wrong settings)

windows version????... windows key + r > type osk.exe and return

do the key positions on the screen sort of match the key on your keyboard? Possible country set wrong if different.

Type via the on screen keyboard the quick brown fox...
type the same thing via the keyboard ... do the two sentences look the same or is one fairly
garbled? if garbled i would 98% say it is a faulty keyboard issue, the 2% it would be a duff motherboard and it is rarely a duff motherboard, but it could be.

Plug in a usb keyboard if the screen and laptop keyboard match and bet the usb keyboard works?

It might be worth checking that your Num Lock key on the keyboard hasn't inadvertently been pressed. It can cause weird and wonderful characters.

    Good luck!
