Washing machine not working (lights are on)

A few days ago the washing machine still had a little water in it and the clothes were soaked. I cleaned out the pump/filter at the bottom which drained out water and had a button and clip in it but fine otherwise.

I then ran a spin and all was fine.

Gone to use it today and the lights are all on and I can hear the machine click (not sure of its locking door or trying to start cycle) but nothing else is happening.

All the pipework and plug etc looks fine and it has been moved or anything recently.

Help!!!

You didn't turn the water off when you were doing things the other day?

Carbon brushes worn out. It will fill and empty pretty much, but the drum wont turn so you just hear a few clicks as the programme goes through the motions. I have changed brushes on my own washer for the last 20 years and probably saved myself approx £43,756.28p in ridiculous repair bills, although I am prone to slight exaggeration.

  • Nope, just checked the inlet and outlet pipe and both seem free of any blockages and working fine

  • Mr Generous, I like how you're generous with your exaggerations too!

It doesn't seem to fill or empty now at all tho?

Also come to think about it, the drawer still had detergent in it, so something has happened mid cycle

So it's not filling. The tap is off or the solenoid valve (which lets the water in) has packed up.

  • Thanks. Water is on, and double checked it. Must be solenoid?

Unless of course it's the brain not telling the solenoid valve! Are you good with water & electricity? If so check there's power getting to the valve, if not keep your fingers out!

  • Not good at all, I'll keep my fingers well out!!!
