  • tweeter moaning he couldn't pay for his tattoo. or his lunch.

Do people really not have a back-up plan? A second bank card?
I must be older and wiser, I'd never go anywhere without some emergency cash.
Is it just me . .

I was surprised at this- OH and I both have Barclays debit cards (different accounts)and neither of us have had a problem using them today. I think we've been very lucky!

No problem here, so must have been lucky. Either that or it was because I wasn't getting a tattoo or buying lunch :rotfl:

seems that all banks are at risk of these glitches. It is precisely the reason I have more than one means of payment.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

Exactly. In addition to my current accounts I also have different credit cards and have never been in the situation of being unable to pay due to a banking issue.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

    "[STRIKE]Oi listen yeah[/STRIKE] Dear Jezza,

Youre stupid bank left me unable to pay for my sarnie and tattoo yesterday. As this [STRIKE]subsickqently[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]subsquickly[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]subscripqwent[/STRIKE] has left me in a state of great emotional distress and PTSD and whiplash and stuff I deserve bare compensation you get me. A million quid should do it or nearest offer hit me up fam and we can talk yeah my Watsapp is xxxxxxxxxxx"

Perhaps better just to approach your local branch with proof of any declined transactions, or lodge a complaint on the customer service number.
    : )
  • Mine worked fine, when I withdrew some cash yesterday afternoon. Strange! had my back up debit card with me though, so I would have been fine!

I do occasionally go out with just one card, especially if I'm heading out for a drink and wouldn't want to lose a wallet full of cards (not that I normally get that inebriated... :rotfl:). I would usually have some cash with me though, and would be meeting someone (or with the OH) so unlikely to be left high and dry.

It's no bad thing paying cash.

Tried a Vietnamese about a month ago, and they took credit cards!
Pleasantly surprised, because a lot of Chinese restaurants are cash only, so I used a credit card. Got skimmed! They got the PIN as well. Got a call from Santander, they tried to withdraw money overseas, and the computer flagged it as suspicious.

If they had tried to withdraw cash from a UK ATM, using the PIN, I doubt it would be flagged. And the Barclaycard has a much higher limit.

Seriously thinking about getting a low limit credit card, especially if I am going to frequent tattoo and massage parlours.
