I'd be more interested to know how these firms cope should they encounter a difficulty in the conveyancing. I'm thinking along the lines of a cheap insurance quote but what happens when you need to claim.

After all you're just one of a thousand conveyances on a conyeyor belt(!) If something goes awry you're just a drop in the national ocean.

I'd rather use a local firm with a good local reputation to uphold. If your affairs are handled badly then you'll tell their everyone around and it will be all their services (e.g. will making, divorces etc) that will be impacted not just conveyancing.

As an aside, I think the success of these online companies is not just the price but also because people nowadays can be nervous of personal contact, especially initiating the service, and would rather communicate via email so they can control how they appear.

    Thanks Phirefly!

Wasn't without the usual anxious moments, especially as we only exchanged contracts the day before completion... I was scared that it could all have fallen through.

As we can't find what we want, we've moved into rented. So now we're waiting for the much discussed house price crash, but that's a whole other forum discussion!

Almost up to exchange now and I have found Kathryn at Beaumont very good. I can't criticise her in any way at all. She calls back, replies to e-mails and talks things through. Best solicitor I have had. Also by far the cheapest. The woman selling the house has gone bankrupt and changed her mind about which house she will buy but that's not the solicitor's fault.

What does annoy me generally is that a friend told me she'd worked for a solicitor and it's common practice for them NOT to answer all the queries, so the other solicitor has to write again for that information, often several times. It's apparently how they add a bit of cream to their charges.

Beaumont has a fixed price deal so they can do what they like in this respect aas far as I am concerned.

So far they have been very good.
