What am I allowed to take an on plane?

I am going to the States in a few days and am a bit worried as to what I'm allowed to take in my luggage. For instance, I've heard that I can't take sun lotion, tweezers or a lighter, is that true? Also must all liquids I take be in small plastic containers. What about food and liquids, can I take chocolate, crisps and water with me to eat on the plane?

I haven't flown for years and want to get this absolutley right, plus I don't want the embaressment.

Can anyone tell me excatly what I can and can't take, or point me in the right direction to get the best updated information please?

Difficult question to answer as the rules for this change daily, the best thing to do would be to contact your airline or go to their website, that way you can be sure to get the accurate and most up to date information.

One thing to remember you can only take 1 piece of hand luggage on board, 1 handbag + 1 holdall counts as 2 pieces, so either leave the handbag at home or stuff into your holdall.

The liquid thing is a very small quantity and yes must be in a plastic bag, bags are available in the airport. But really the best thing is not to carry ANY liquids, you can buy bottles when in departures, but not allowed to take them on the aircraft. Food is ok but you have to careful that US do not allow many things to enter into the country again look at the airlines website, or even your departure airports website, they will give all the updated info.

  • Thanks David, I will try and get some more info from the airport. Where you say about liquids, am I right in assuming this means things like shampoo cleansing lotions etc? Can these items not even be packed in my case in their proper bottles?
  • Any liquid is liquid, be it shampoo or a drink, it all counts.

Sun lotion, tweezers, lighters, shampoos etc must be packed in your hold luggage, not in your hand luggage.

As regards bottled water etc you can buy these after security in Duty Free at Boots for instance you can buy a meal deal and take that onboard with you.

Liquid in your carry on has to be in bottles of less than 100ml each. They have to be inside a clear resealable plastic bag. You can get these at the airport, but they may well charge you for them (£1 at Bristol airport!!!), but the resealable sandwich bags from the supermarket are fine. You can put any size liquid in your luggage in the hold.

You're not allowed lighters at all, though I had one in my carry on when I came back from the States with no problem. Tweezers or penknives aren't allowed in carry on, but are ok in your baggage.

You can take any food you like on board with you. You can take water/drinks on, as long as you bought it at the airport after going through security.

Hiya. I go to States every year. Best if you adhere to strictest interpretation of regulations post-911. Also check with your airline AND the airport you're departing from, as differing luggage & carry-on allowances MAY apply.

So, minimal liquids (soap, toothpaste, etc) allowed - up to 3 oz. Have all toiletries in 1 litre size ziplock bag - I think it's 1 bag per person.

Supposedly from the horse's mouth (US Transport Security Authority):

The Chief Medical Officer in the UK has issued a procedure for those taking medication on flights (DOH 2006).

    Hope this helps.

I've just returned from Canada this morning and I needed lipbalm, lipstick, face moisturiser, handcream and perfume in my hand baggage. I find that flying makes my skin so dry without the creams etc. and I can't imagine what my lips would be like with no lipbalm!

I didn't even think you could buy a book of matches anymore, can they be bought from a normal shop?

Ok as I'm typing this, I've just checked my emails and had this one back from Cardiff airport. Thought I'd copy and paste it for anyone reading this thread who may have the same concerns.

Also thanks guys for all the replies. :T

Each passenger is allowed one piece of hand luggage (including handbag), with a maximum size of 56 x 45 x 25cm.

All liquids (creams, pastes, lotions, gels, perfume etc) carried as hand luggage, must be carried in a clear, resealable plastic bag of capacity no more than one litre.
    This is approximately 8” x 8”.
No single item can be larger than 100ml in capacity, so for this reason I would recommend that you place your shampoo, shower gel etc into your hold luggage.
There is no need to decant liquids into smaller bottles, just ensure that no single item is larger than 100ml.

Tweezers can be carried in your hold luggage.

Regarding lighters, each passenger is permitted to carry one lighter on their person.
It must not be placed in your hold luggage.
For the second leg of your journey to USA, can I suggest you seek advice at Amsterdam.

    Hope this helps.

I agree...for long haul I need at least lip balm and moisturiser, I like to take cleansing wipes and a bottle of water too (but will buy those at Boots after security). I definately don't go the route of talking my whole toiletry bag with me tho (that goes in the hold where it belongs and I've never had any leakage) and I usually try to keep my handluggage to minimum - I just hate carrying it around and wrestling with it on the plane!

These are the UK handbaggage restrictions as applied by security: http://www.heathrowairport.com/portal/page/LHR%5EAirport+Information%5ESecurity+control/fb9da11b4763d010VgnVCM10000036821c0a____/448c6a4c7f1b0010VgnVCM200000357e120a____/
they need to be applied in conjunction with the rules of your airline, but should there be a discrepancy between the two (eg in luggage size or number of pieces) then the security rules take precedence.
