    Am I to assume it's never been serviced either?

    This is why I don't buy cars that have done less than 10k per year.

    £150 for the belt alone. A proper brand belt is £30. So £120 labour for 40 minutes work?

    +1. Low mileage cars actually go on an abnormal service schedule as low mileage either means lots of short town journeys which wear a car out a lot quicker than motorway ones or long periods being sat which does tyres, bearings, seals, brake callipers and most other moving parts no good. Trouble is that lots of people like the OP go "but I've only done a few thousand miles so it doesn't need doing" and as a result lots of low mileage cars have seen things like the bottom ends of the engine fail at very low mileages once they're bought by someone who actually uses it.

  • For peace of mind change it, they normally quote a mileage or 5 years to change. I think it won't break but it is Russian roulette if you don't change.

    This is perfectly true. But am I misreading something, or did the OP say it's 6 years old with 6K on the clock ?? Blimey, there's low mileage and there's low mileage, but really - 1000 mile a year ???? I'd be very suspicious of this, quite apart from anything else.
