My sympathies kgldsun for the extremely difficult predicament that you find yourself in.
When my late mother had a very severe stroke a few years ago (sister and self had POA) I found AgeUK an invaluable source of advice.
We managed to get NHS CHC to pay for her nursing home fees. Never could have done that without MSE monkeyspanner's help.
I understand, however, that CHC is notoriously difficult to obtain where dementia is involved.
I can't see how you can avoid selling your parents' house.

Yes you are quite right only self funders (as in this case) can claim AA. But even several years ago when they thought that someone would need funding they would be prepared to let them home alone & only changed their minds when they found out there was money.
Care homes need self funders to be able to charge enough to keep going. Some charge almost double the LA rate.0
