What legal rights does a person have to property in somebody else's home?

Hi,
I hope i'm in the right section.
I'd like some advice for a friend.
She split from her ex boyfriend a couple of years ago. He lived in her home for about 3 years or so. He moved his belongings into her home. He even made her sell her own belongings (e.g. furniture) in order to accommodate his own.
She told him when they split up to move his things out and he said he would but never did. He's had years to do so.
She forced him to go around to hers recently and gave him most of it back except for some essentials e.g. furniture which she isn't willing to give back because some of it is her children's furniture.
He has essentially used her home as a storage place.
She wants to keep one item which is disputed between them. It's a sticking point between them.
My question is this:
What legal rights does he have to claim anything else back now?
Am i right in thinking after a number of years, the items belong to the owner of said property?
