Who is covered by a Home Contents policy?

I'm comparing insurance at the moment as it is renewal time, and suddenly wondered if our adult son's belongings are covered?

What made me think about it is the option to have more than one policy holder. I naturally add my husband on the basis that if necessary the insurance company will deal with him if I should be unavailable for any reason, but then wondered if our son should be added, or is he covered without as the comparison sites or companies all ask how many adults and children live in the property?

I haven't got booklets - I'm trying comparison sites at the moment. If I've got to go to each individual company website and download a booklet/terms and conditions I'll be here until Kingdom come.

Surely it must be common that all family members are either covered or not?

    I have discovered the following
"The insurance covers your own possessions and those of close family members living with you. It may not cover the possessions of anyone staying with you temporarily."
    from Citizens Advice website

I usually pick the top three you like either on price or rep and go through the T+C and compare them. You got to look at it anyways before you buy

  • To be honest, ignore the wording on the CAB website.
The insurers are free to write what terms they want, I think it's dangerous for CAB to put that as there is no comeback on them if it's taken as gospel.

Most insurers will include family permanently residing at the risk address, but as mentioned, you can only be sure by checking the wordings of the shortlisted companies.

    Yep.

    Nope.

Each policy will have its own unique wording for who is covered, and how long they have to reside at the insured address during the year. Some will say it has to be permanent residence, others will give N amount of months. If this is a sticking point for you, check the policy booklets of the cheapest on the comparison sites to see which is most suitable for you. It may take time, but it'll be worth the investment if you ever need it for a pay out.
