Am I paying Virgin too much

I've not paid much attention to my Virgin bill for a while but as I'm off sick just now I've got time to look twice.

Noticed they are charging me £43 a month. I don't watch much TV (probably only need the equivalent of Freeview channels but I remember they sent an engineer out last year and gave me a Tivo box) never use the landline so that just leaves Broadband.

So when I pare it down, it looks like I'm paying £43 for Broadband.

I could phone them but they always go all techie and confuse me, I'm a bit of a luddite! Should I stay with Virgin and just try to shave a few pounds off the deal (maybe it's not too expensive I've no idea???) or should I look at alternatives?

Thanks very much.

While you are looking at your overall telecoms spend, it may be useful to work out whether paying around £8 per month for unlimited anytime inclusive calls to landline numbers, 03 numbers and mobile numbers from your landline and dropping your mobile phone tariff down to cover only the calls you make while you are away from home could save you even more money.
  • that seems pretty standard for their package of TV & internet tbh. but if you're not using the TV, just go freeview and only pay for the internet! you can stream a lot now. i don't pay for any TV package, i subscribed to nowtv and it costs £9.99 per month for the movies and £6.99 per month for the entertainment. this includes live broadcasting of the only channels i watch so it works out a lot cheaper!

plusnet do a 38mbps internet for £25 a month. so you can definitely shave some money off if you just go internet only.

My work supply me with an IPhone for all my calls so no need for a landline at all, however it appears I need to have one. I really just need basic TV and broadband.

phone them up and say you don't want TV anymore. (assuming you haven't done a deal in the last 11 months)

See what prices they come up with. Think about it etc.

You will often find a few days after the deal has been done, they say you have keep the basic TV and tivo for no extra

No, you don't need a Virgin landline- I don't use mine, but when I told them to cancel, the discounts were reduced and the cost of the (excellent) internet connection went up so I was no better off in real terms!

I use my landline to dial 150 and say, I'm paying too much!

    I'll give that a try.....!
  • So just called Virgin (call the Loyalty Team on 0800 052 8310) rather than 150 as it takes 20 mins to get through then they give you this number to call.

Was very polite and told the guy that I felt I was paying far too much for essentially the lowest TV package and Broadband (and didn't use landline) also hammered home the fact that I'd been a loyal Virgin Media customer for over 5 years.

He was really helpful and professional, and he ended up giving me £2 off per month but if I confirmed I was staying with them for another 12 months he'd then also give me a further £30 one-off discount. As I had no intention of changing supplier, I didn't mind committing to the yearly contract.

    Result!
