Moving to a house with Prepayment meters, who changes to credit meters for free?

Hi all

I am moving into my first home on Tuesday. I just found out on Sunday that the meters installed in the house are prepayments meters which is supposedly the more expensive way to pay for Gas and Electric.

I would like to change to credit meters but I hear some companies charge and others don't. I am finding the smaller/cheaper companies like avro and ovo either don't do the change at all, or don't do it for free of charge.

Can anyone recommend an easy way to find this out, or does anyone have any experience of this themselves about which companies are cheap and do the meter change for free?

Thanks

Louise

If your credit is decent, SSE will do it straight away (and it'll only be a 'soft' credit search, so wont affect your credit rating).

If it's not, EDF will do it for free after 3 months.

All suppliers have to change prepay to credit for free if you pass a few checks.Good job OFGEM brought this rule in because Scottish Power were charging over £200 a meter, thereby handcuffing customers to expensive standard tariffs. Since April 2016 suppliers can no longer charge what they fancy.
  • Hi both

Thank you for the replies. I called EDF and got some clarification. They said they will do the swtich for free and I will then be on the standard tarriff which has no early exit fees so I can switch to any new supplier straight after the switch which is good news. They said the switch typically takes 2-3 weeks!
