All depends on model, what sort of house and as you say usage to your estimated saving.
For outlay room stat will save the most to cost.

How much do you think a room stat would cost?

A standard wireless room stat at tool station is about £45 and you'd keep your existing timer or you could get one that replaces your timer or you could get a google nest/ British gas hive for a couple of hundred it's up to you. Which ever you get can stay whenever you decide to change your boiler.
  • Thank you all for your replies.

My boiler is a Potterton Flamingo 50 so a conventional non-condensing boiler, will I be able to get a wireless room thermostat to work with such an old boiler?
  • A flamingo is about 65% eff as per sedbuk ratings, so you'd save approx £30 for every £100 you spend on gas. You can't fit a wireless stat to any system just need to wire in to the timer.

I would make every effort to keep your existing boiler.

The theoretical efficiency of combi condensing boilers is very rarely achieved in actual use (like car mpg 'tests') so you'll likely not save much anyway.

Although it's perfectly safe, it complies with the gas regs of years back. Since then, there's been innumerable 'make work' new regs so you'll be told the flue needs moving, lengthening, lining, all of the above.

Then you'll need pipework installed for the boiler condensate, it's a no-no to drain into the bath waste pipe of course!

To get the combi guarantee, you'll likely need to power-flush the pipes and rads, that's £500 plus

Running at mains water pressure, combi can blow holes in existing pipework and rads that would have been fine if left alone.

To get enough flame for instantaneous water heating in a combi, you may need to increase size of gas pipe from the meter.

Combis are made of the very thinnest steel and won't last

The problem is you will not get all the parts which is fine unless it breaks when you haven't got the money to replace.
You also have th running cost, maintance and gas being used of the multi point hot water boiler.
Condense pipework can go in to a foul drain so no reason why it can't go into the bath waste.
The system can be flushed. The flue maybe fine to go in the same place. Just depends on where it is at the moment.
The gas pipework will need most likely need increasing and there is a risk of pin holes on pipework and rads by make the system pressurised but there is benefits. The boiler you have is 25years plus and despite what some people say will not last for ever and if as you say for once you have the money I would definitely think about replacing.

That being said, you could leave all as is and just fit wireless room stat and save your self some money
