Free gas for 12 months when you buy a new boiler frm BG
I came across a page on the British Gas site regarding an offer of free gas on purchase of a new boiler. https://www.britishgas.co.uk/BookingAnAppointmentFromHomePage
The reason this caught my eye, is that I currently spend over £700 pa on Gas. My Combi Boiler is 11 years old and has no efficiency rating. I would not know where to start if I wanted to gauge its efficiency / performance.
It goes with out say that BG are expensive and if they charged £1500 to replace a boiler. Using very crude maths I would get a new efficient boiler for £800. Couple this with the ongoing savings from the greater efficiency of the new boiler. The breakeven point would probably come within 4 /5 years.
In addition I pay BG for their CH care package and this also comes free for 12 months. Not withstanding 12 month warranty on new boiler. Take off another £192.
This is all speculation at present as I am unable to workout the following items which would allow for more accurate calculation.
Current boiler performance / efficiency.
Cost of new boiler from BG ( have not yet requested a quote)
Efficiency and saving from proposed new boiler.
Unfortunately with all offers there is the small print. You must purchase your gas from BG or signup for a 12 month contract to be eligible for the 1 yr free gas. This does not stop you from switching after 12 months.
Has anyone taken up thier offer?
I would like to know what comparisons others have used when contemplating this offer.
How much do they charge and how do they calculate the efficiency savings.
Thanks

Get some qotes from independant plumbers for installing an energy efficient boiler. It may work out cheaper.0
-
Thanks Barry,
I realise that an independant Plumber would probably do the job for less.
My interest is the cost difference taking into consideration the refund on gas for 12 months. Is the price of an independant plumber still going to be cheaper.
I would like to know if other members have already looked at this offer and done some costings0 -
I too have looked at this calculation as my boiler is 19 years old.
Have you looked at the SEDUK site to get the efficiency of your boiler?
2 further factors to consider in the economics.
You need to take into account the cost of borrowing(or loss of interest if you pay cash)
Secondly modern condensing boilers are stuffed full of electronic and many of the 'experts' believe we have entered an era where 10 years life from boilers will be as much as we can expect. The old Boilers have very little major to go wrong with them.0 -
I Dont Think You'll Get A Boiler For £1500 From Bg. More Like £3000, But Their Boilers Are Top Notch!0
-
I think even £3000 is being a bit optimistic for a BG install- search the forums there plenty on BG Rip offs!0
-
Thanks Roddy and gasman.
It is a bit alarming to hear that they charge so much for a boiler. As far as being "top notch", thery are only rebadged boilers form quaulity brands that you can buy elswhere. Quite frighning really.
I had a whole house re plumbed CH hot and cold services, gas hob and bathroom fitted for £2000 albeit 10 years ago. I would rather do a corgi course than pay over £3k for a new boiler to be fitted.0 -
I had a BG quote last year for a new condensing combi. It was £2,700, but they'd knock off £100 if I signed up on the spot. I showed him the door instead!
A local firm have since installed a very good boiler for a total price of £1,400
BG are a rip-off. I once had a BG engineer suggest I get my gas fire serviced. He added "not by us though - we're too expensive".

I've a friend who was quoted £4000 for a boiler install. A local plumber did the same job for £1500.0

I am in the market for a new (replacement) boiler [see post under 'combi boiler BG rip-off'].
The quote, from a BG 'sales advisor' (a guy I thought was knowledgable and honest) for a 'British/Scottish gas Worcester Greenstar 24i Junior HE boiler' was nearly nearly £1100 for the boiler alone [see supremeplumb website, it can be bought for £710], plus other bits and installation cost, ended up at over £3650 less this offer of a year's free gas -- up to a max. of £800, (or £305.81 off the up-front cost of the job); to be fair, the deal included a years free 'Homecare 200' package [for boiler with a two year manufacturer's warranty??]
By my calculations, at the latest BG click energy 4 prices, I would have to use 41,611 kwh (my last years consumption, without being mean with the time-clock and the wall stat settings, was 17,284kwh), that's nearly two-and-half times as much !!!!
To cap all that, the 'sales advisor' give me some completely wrong information on system cleaning/flushing process (necessary to comply with most boiler manufacturer's warranty) and that the above Worcester boiler was not a standard Worcester boiler of a similar model number, but had far superior component parts. According to Worcester Bosch Technical Advice dept. THAT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE, the only difference is the badge on the front !!!!0
