Default after 4 years

Options
Hi all

I ran into some trouble over 4 years ago with Npower, long story short they didn't collect my DD's and I didn't check, ended up owing around £1500 - I moved house and since them have sorted myself out financially but have never heard from them, I have been at the same address for years and on the electoral role so not hiding, they have yesterday put a default on my credit file for Jan 2017 - I am not disputing I owe the money but it seems strange to wait over 4 years and then suddenly appear, ca they do this? Not disputing I owe it but it just doesn't make sense after such a long time. Thanks for any advice (Experian have sent a request to the to change the date for e already, no reply yet)

Im also surprised they waited till now to add the default, its normally done nearer the time.

When was it the issues started ?

The date of the default should be no later than 3-6 months from the last payment made before you went ino arrears. You will be able to get that changed. You will need to pay them to prevent a the possibility of a CCJ.

I agree. They can't just slap a default on whenever they like.

However, a possible reason for this is that they may have sold the debt on to a collection agency which has then re-marked your file. Would be worth double checking this, although if they have, I'm pretty sure the agency can't mark a default later than the default of the original debt (which should have happened within a few months of going into arrears).
  • I moved out Dec 2012 and obviously hadn't paid it for a few months so maybe August 2012. I have just got myself straight so a bit gutted as I had forgotten about the debt to be honest but I owe it so can't moan.
