Should I use wireless? New home, advice needed.

I'm moving home next week and where I want to put my computer there is no telephone point closeby. Should I get an extension telephone cable installed or change to wireless? I know nothing about wireless:o

My existing set up is a Dell Dimension 3000 with an inbuilt router. I use 'dial up' with Fast4, which is fine; most of the time.

If it is possible to connect wirelessly using 'dial up' what bits do I need to buy and how much would it cost approx? Would I need to alter any of my existing computer settings?

My OH has an Acer laptop. Could she also connect wirelessly?

All info appreciated.

You can use dial up over wireless - read this for more info.

Basically you would need a router, an external modem and a wireless access point. You would then have to ensure that your PC and laptop are capable of receiving wireless tranmissions, i.e. have a wireless card in them.

However, you will find it very slow if you are both trying to acess the internet at the same time. Personally, I would go to somewhere like B&Q and buy a telephone extension cable. You can get very thin ones that are easily hidden under carpets etc and it would save you lots.

If you are in an area that supports broadband, why don't you look here as an example of the current deals - You can probably find a provider that is the same price as you are paying now, much faster and alot throw in free wireless routers and modems :)

  • Thanks John for your response. I'll go the B&Q route.

We are off travelling next Spring for a few years. All the lower priced broadband providers seem to require 12-18 month contracts, so I guess we'll stick with our dial-up.

    Thanks for your help.
