Like you, I would be very angry if somebody drilled holes in the living room walls of my house without my consent.
OP didn't say they were the walls. I've come across samples being taken from timber before.

The holes were drilled into the external walls. I've sent photos to the EA. Will see what they say.

It would be extremely unlikely for a surveyor to drill holes in the walls, especially not the size of a 10p and certainly not without the express permission of the homeowner.

The only reason I can think of would be to use deep wall probes or take samples for a carbide meter but the holes would be about half that size.

If it was the surveyor and it was done without permission then you can claim for the cost of reinstating the holes and making good any decorations.

So probably to do a wall tie or cavity wall inspection with a borescope or endoscope, like this one:

As you can see, the drill hole needs to be big enough to allow a 9mm tube through.

But not in the living room. You would expect to see borescope survey holes externally and not just 2 in the same area.

A 10p is 24.5mm diameter, that is a big hole for any kind of survey or inspection.

I'm intrigued to find out who drilled these holes and why? I'm thinking hardcore mice with a big drill.

As the OP posted almost 2 hours before you replied ...

I read it as the external walls "in the living room" as OP wrote it ie. the external envelope rather than the internal walls. You would hardly describe drilling holes outside as being "in the living room", but hopefully the OP will come back and enlighten us.

Either way the surveyor would not be drilling any holes in a standard survey.
  • I meant the internal side of an external wall.

All sorted now, surveyor is returning tomorrow to fill the holes - problem solved.

Thanks for the comments. And the poster concerned that I was being spied on in the bath, given I'm a pot-bellied, balding single bloke in my 50s - I'm not sure what the surveyor would be getting out of that, but who knows?!?

You can't leave it like that.

Why did he drill the holes? What was he looking for?
