N&P closing current account??? Whats a good current account nowadays?

N&P have said they maybe closing current accounts down.. this leaves me with a pickle as I really don't know where to go?

I like the looks of Santander... but only because of the cash back option and I have my mortgage with them.

after all bills go out and paid for everything I have about 600 a month left in my account.

how do people rate Santander? is there any other accounts that maybe useful?

cheers

What account? If it's 123, does the cashback justify paying £5 monthly fee?

Probably M&S as they have slightly reduced forex fees, a interest free overdraft and a switching bonus. You can use HSBC branches for basic transactions in addition to M&S Bank ones.

If Santander, then look into the 123 lite if your average balance will be low.

Both HSBC & M&S have (at present!) regular monthly savers offering 5% interest as well.

As an N&P Current account holder, I have the alternative banks before me like a row of skittles. I'm picking them off one by one! N&P really set the standard and others just don't measure up.

I'll avoid any that have senior staff due in Court or jail. any that have been fined zillions - it can only come from the account holders, any that have had zillions embezzled - that can only be replaced from account holder funds. Any that are slow to process transactions to the irritation of account holders, and any that are for sale.
The last skittle standing will get my application, and if they don't want me, then it'll have to be the UTM Bank upstairs!

To me Tesco and Nationwide set the standard. Did N&P pay 3% interest?

Or that could be an institution that was heavily fined for Mis selling high risk products and then had to compensate their customers tens of millions leading to takeover by a larger institution and their eventual effective demise...
  • It is a shrinking puddle now really. I remember a time when you had Abbey National, National and Provincial, The Woolwich, Girobank all offering a chequebook and card account.

Plenty of banks still offer them?
