Why don't they configure cars how we want?

The style comes with aircon and the lack of alloys on a sub nine grand car wouldn't be a deal breaker.

I have a previous model Style which (thank God) does not have aircon.

I'd rather have air-con that I would use all the time, than alloy wheels that leak, automatic wipers, foglights, body coloured mirrors and door handles, plastic "leather" that cracks, deep pile carpet that I will cover with a mat anyway, a front spoiler that scrapes on speedhumps, and all the other expensive fripperies that Marketing "think" I want.............
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Answer: because they'd have to build every single one to order in a specific spec. If you want that, buy a Bentley, or an Aston Martin. Or maybe a BMW Mini - there are 15quadrillion build combinations on the Mini. That should bee enough to satisfy you, I'd have thought?

When I asked the sales guy why you can't get the nice exterior with the nice interior his reply was that everyone would want that one and they wouldn't sell any other versions.

    Crazy

When you drive down the road do you notice that there are many makes, models, colour and trim versions of vehicles to an almost infinitesimal number of combinations? That is because people like different things and we're not all the same so just because you find X & Y unappealing doesn't mean someone else does.

After a bit of research I think a better question would have been

"Why didn't the salesman tell me I could buy the one with the nice interior and add the extra spoilers and skirts to it, rather than trying to sell me the cheaper model that already has them on?"

I've since found out I can get, the one I want - The Sport Nav with the nice interiors and extras and buy the extra exterior trims.

Just want to find out now whether they will do that for me or whether I have to buy them and get them fitted elsewhere.

I suspect the reason they didn't tell me this was because they had 4 of the ready made up Sport Blacks on the forecourt they wanted to sell.

What I want is a car that is as nice on the inside as the outside.
If you have seen the difference between the inside of Sport Nav compared to the Sport Black you will know what I mean.

If customers could specify just which options they want then they might spend less than having to buy a certain trim to get a mix of options, some of which the customer wants and others they don't.

The alternative is to make everything an option and charge a lot of each option individually - some makers seem to do this.

    The opposite in my case.

I want the Sport Nav, with metallic option and a few extra body trims.

It will work out about £1500 more than the one they want to sell me.

It's looking like I can do this after all by buying the extra trimmings.

It's a shame I had to find this out rather than the salesman implying I couldn't and trying to sell the one he had ready to go.

Because, strangely, his response is unlikely to be that not everybody's opinion of "tacky" is the same as yours...

You say that the difference is "cheaper" wheels on one version - they appear to me to be the exact same style of wheel, it's just an inch difference and a different paint finish on them. Higher-profile tyres will give a better ride at the expense of a bit of grip. It's a Mazda 2, fertheloveofgawd. If you're going to want that grip, you're looking in the wrong place.

Assuming you mean the black cloth interior, then I find the red stripe in the Sport Nav tacky as all hell. Actually, I find all the choices, across all trim levels, fairly horrible, but the SE-L/Black black cloth is the least bad.

The bodykit on the Black is... minimalist. A fairly innocuous black spoiler and sill extension. That's it? Oh, wait. A grim Halfords-special rear wing. On a Mazda 2... Whatever floats your boat. But, as has been posted already, the kit is available for retro-fitting if you must.

And I s'pose it's a stupid question to ask why the Black Edition is available in white or red, but not black, and the Red Edition in black or white, but not red... Still, all the colours are fairly meh, apart from the revolting pink. Not that I can imagine any circumstances in which I'd be buying a Mazda 2.

Finally, let's not forget that factory-fit nav is usually a lot more expensive to upgrade maps on than a standalone, and is impossible to upgrade the other functionality on.

But, hey, that's just... my personal taste. Which clearly differs from yours. I wonder if that's why they offer the range they do? They think they're the combos which will appeal most widely to the typical buyer...?

Good grief. The salesman was nudging you towards what he had in stock...

For example, the cheapest Fiesta doesn't have air conditioning or alloy wheels, which probably makes it almost unsellable.

On my previous car I rarely used AC, and that was living in Italy. On my current car I have steel wheels and for winter an extra set with snow tyres on. Nor do I have sat-nav. The cargets me across France and the mountains in winter with no problems, and the view that alloys etc. are essential is not one everybody shares.

As for spoilers: plenty of retro-fit ones on the local estate, along with dodgy exhausts - again a very personal choice..
