Thought this may be a good thread to start. I love the slow cooker, when you get the hang of it! Nice to come home to a meal that's been cooking while you are at work.
Here is my basic Beef Casserole
900g beef cuts (£7)
750g baby potatoes (large ones halved) (£1)
2 leeks diced (50p)
4 large carrots diced (50p)
4 large parsnips diced (50p)
1.5 tablespoon tomato puree (20p)
250ml beef stock (10p)
1 table spoon mixed herbs (pence)
Good splash of Worcestershire sauce (pence)
S&P to taste
Throw all in slow cooker. Cook on low for 8 hours
Does around 4-6 meals. If 6 meals that's circa £1.50 a meal

Might have to try this for hubby and freeze in portions (I am veggie), I have a slow cooker, and do use it, but have not had much success with meat meals without adding a tinned or packet sauce. This sounds a really robust recipe. We are going away in the summer with my dad and brother and I would like a really Good recipe to use and cook a substantial meal in a slow cooker to show my dad how easy it can be. He is a widow and while he is trying to get to grips with cooking, he struggles with meat and over cooks it I the oven, he prefers the bbq in the summer as he gets better results. I think he would benefit from a slow cooker - but needs to see it in action before he will consider it.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0

Personally I find it better to brown the meat first as it looks more aesthetically pleasing. I`ve made a good chicken casserole and also beef. Great recipe on Mumsnet for sausage casserole- really yummy.
My recipes take 3-4 hours.0 -
Those quantities wouldn't fit in mine... as it's smaller.... I'd use less half those ingredients as the norm, maybe 1/3rd.
Mine'd serve 6 too.0 -
There's lots of slow cooker recipes here:

Actually, I'm really pleased you posted - I'm going to browse the recipes myself.
Sometimes I'm looking for a recipe for a particular type of meat and it would be handy.0 -
you've reminded me that I recently cut out a recipe from some mag for making cheesecake in a slowcooker - must hunt it out & try it!0

There's a slow cooker cheesecake in the current Tesco free magazine - looks wonderful. I'd have a go if I wasn't on a diet and could have such things in the house!

Hi I need help.
I'm thinking of getting a slow cooker, reading so many different reviews making me confused.
Has anyone got any recommendations, there are 2 of us. So what size would we need.
Thanks for any help.xx0 -

Although the last reply was a long time ago, the principles still stand.
FWIW, I have 2.
A 6.5 litre one (Morphy Richards, I think) which is fondly referred to as 'the baby bath' and an Argos one that is 3.5 litres.
The Argos one is deeper in comparison to its circumference to the MR and I think it cooks better than the bigger one.
But neither cook as well as the original Prestige Crock-pot that my ex-Mum-in-law gave me over 40 years ago that sadly 'died'.
I use the small one for 2-4 portions and the larger one for batch cooking chilli etc.
So it depends how you're going to use it.
I use them a lot.
Last Friday was beef stew and today I'm doing pork goulash in the smaller one today.-1 -
Thanks for your help, at least I have an idea now x0
