Unaware default?

Options
Good morning/afternoon/evening depending when you read folks,

Having mild heart failure due to a default being on my credit score. I had no idea that it was there nor have I ever been notified or chased for debt.

Now I'm not disputing that the debt need to be paid, as clearly it does and I've requested the information to pay now that I know it's there.

However I'm really worried about the default as I'm hoping to obtain a mortgage next year for my first home. Is it right that they can place a default on my account without ever chasing me or notifying me of a debt?

Not really sure how best placed to proceed. The company in question is 1st Credit Finance (passed to them by Very).

Now that I'm aware this has impacted my credit score quite badly it's obviously causing me loads of stress. Please could someone advise?

Happy to provide further details if needed/thanks to anyone who takes the time to read.

Have a nice day x

  • What was the value and date of the default?

Ignore your credit score, but use a broker when it comes to applying for a mortgage, if your file is still little rough.
  • Thanks for replying so quick.

Date of the account was 2013 - Date of the default was June 2016. As I've said to the company, happy to pay the debt but wasn't ever chased/notified by either party.

    Did you move since 2013?
  • This wouldn't happen to be Very's 'buy now, pay later, but delivery not included' scam, would it?
  • I moved in august last year but my mother still lives at my old address and gives me all my post that does arrive.

Upon speaking to the credit company they say they email and text about the debt but as I say nothing ever received. All I have actually received is a customer satisfaction survey which as you can imagine went down like a lead balloon.

Well then, did you update your address with very after moving? If you didn't then you will have tough time proving that you didn't receive them.

But even if you didn't, that doesn't take away the liability to track your own debts. It's up to you to keep track of it and make the payments, not for them to chase you up for them. Generally when it comes to them chasing you up, it will show on your credit file.
  • I get that, but I've moved 2 doors down so it's not like I wouldn't have got them. Especially when they confirmed on the phone all contact was via email and SMS.

Was more looking for advice on what to do next rather than a lecture on paying debt anyways.

Nothing to do besides taking in the lecture about staying on top of your accounts in the future. The entry on your credit file reflects how the account was handled.
  • who is the default with? if it is a payday loan company, they're generally not the best at following process so you could potentially challenge via the financial ombudsman. even the major banks fail to follow guidance - defaults can be challenged altho' it may take a few months to resolve.

The default is from "Very" as stated in the OP which is an online shopping site, not a payday loan company.
