What exactly does the procedure involve and what did your vet say when you asked what the costs would cover?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Having an ear flushed means a GA , and they don't come cheap

Do you not get an itemised invoice? My vet has every thing used on the invoice and GA's are not expensive.

Whilst I appreciate all fees seem steep when you are paying, £180 does not buy very much of a professional person's time.

For example, have a look at your GP website where they will no doubt have a list of charges for anything or anybody not covered by the NHS. £80 for a 20 min consultation is quite normal.

Few solicitors charge less that £200 an hour, many a great deal more.

It is only when you have been involved in running any kind of professional practice, paying staff, overheads, vastly expensive equipment and substantial insurance premiums that you start to understand why it costs what it does.

GA charge is related to the weight of your dog- but as he's a JR terrier that shouldn't be too huge.

Last week my trailie girl had to have 2 teeth out, together with teeth scale & polish. She weighs 26.5kg. Total cost £155: roughly £50 vet fees, £50 GA, £25 follow-uo antibiotics for 7 days- the other £30 were on disposable items.

Sounds like good value compared with your bill- but my plastic still squealed!! This is a low cost/ low waged part of the country

I have to say when I booked her in for the proceedure they asked if I had insurance (no) I suspect this may boost the cost- paperwork, waiting for settlement etc.
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Have they discussed diet? I had a dog the same, turned out her food had too much protein. Found a food with less, problem solved.

Compare veterinary costs to the cost of private healthcare for humans, and the costs don't seem so unreasonable.

    I've joined petplan insurance it's about £23 a month.
I'm also joining vets4pets maintenance plan for flea, worm, vax & nail clipping, that's about £12.
That's me covered apart from food.
