Scottish Power Erroneous Transfer Letter

I moved into my property almost 2 years ago and immediately changed the energy supplier from Scottish Power to E.ON.

I absolutely loathe everything about Scottish Power. Incompetent doesn't begin to cover it.

Anyway, 2 years later they send me a letter saying they are investigating an erroneous transfer, and if they conclude that my account was transferred erroneously I will be automatically moved back to them. They asked me not to call them as the process is automatic.

I should call them right?

I can't think of anything worse than my account being moved back to Scottish Power and all the problems that will bring. But I also am not looking forward to calling their incompetent staff and explaining this situation.

Sigh.

Did you contact the Deemed Supplier (Scottish Power) when you first moved in or did you just initiate a switch?

If it was the latter, then Scottish Power has the right to treat the transfer as erroneous. That said, I am surprised that it has taken them so long to notice.

If their claim for ET is upheld, then the rule is that your supply should be transferred back to them on the contract terms that applied at the time. This, I am afraid, means that you would be on their standard variable tariff. They would claim back all monies paid to E.oN and bill you for the difference. I am not aware that ET claims are time limited.

I called Scottish Power to cancel.

I'm pretty sure I did everything correctly. I don't trust their ability to perform this investigation correctly one bit!

Sorry - when did you call SP to cancel? What has happened here, I guess, is that SP has sent the previous owner/tenant a bill and it has emerged that they were not responsible for bills. When you move into a property, you cannot just cancel the supply as the supplier has a legal obligation to keep the lights on. What you have to do is contact the Deemed Supplier with your details and meter readings: you are then free to initiate a switch. You then pay the Deemed Supplier until the transfer of supply goes through.

Yes, I contacted Scottish Power on the day we moved in, gave them meter readings and details. I paid them for a couple of weeks of usage before I cancelled and moved to E.ON.

I had the pleasure of talking to their customer service reps multiple times to get this done.

In that case, SP doesn't have a claim. Do you still have the final statement from SP? I would call them ASAP to stop them making an ET.

This sounds very odd, unless they have switched the wrong meter and one of your neighbours has now complained.

If you are sure the correct meter has been switched, then I suggest you contact your current supplier, Eon, as they can object to the ET request.
