Gym membership

So I signed up to a gym in January 16 for a 12mth membership. I haven't used the facility in 6mths and cancelled my membership on 26th January 2017.

Now I'm getting demands for a 12th monthly payment plus late fees of 30pounds saying that my last payment date is February because my DD didn't kick in until 1st March 2016.

My argument is that my membership started when I signed the contract on 26/01/16 and shouldve ended a year later. I paid for Feb 16 (first month) in cash so surely this DD contract should only have been for the remaining 11 mths not a full year?

Do I have a case for argument? I really don't see why I should pay further monies to a gym that I barely used in the first place.

You'll have to look at the terms of the contract you signed and go from there although with most gyms you do have to give notice of cancellation and not just cancel the direct debit, I'm assuming you didn't do this as they would have informed you of the agreement terms sooner if you had.

It's like with phone contracts, you can't just cancel the direct debit when it comes to the end it goes onto a monthly rolling contract instead and you have to give a months notice to leave.
