Have you now had them done? In your position I would have paid up at the clinic.

That's incorrect as a blanket statement. Certain types of antibiotics are available OTC (for example Neomycin). Besides, this is an irrelevant point as malaria is a parasite, not a bacteria.

Malaria tablets can also certainly be bought online, or directly in a pharmacy when dispensed by a pharmacist, in the absence of a GP or private prescription.

To clarify: there are a number of different anti-malarial tablets. Some kinds can be bought over-the-counter, while others require a prescription.

And Doxy happens to be a strong antibiotic, despite the fact that it is an effective antimalarial.

They probably aren't dodgy - just a good old normal chemist who knows their customers. FYI all these medications that don't need a prescription but aren't available over the counter can only be dispensed after consulting the chemist - this is because the particular medication can be abused, so if the chemist knows you and knows you are not going to abuse it they will give it to you no problem. THE PROBLEM STARTS when dealing with the PHARMACY CHAINS where personal service is virtually non-existent so they have to worry you may be abusing these medications hence they ask you to fill in forms etc.

Moral of the story shop at your local independent chemist!
