I was in a similar situation to you, and received full year credits for the years I was a single parent working part time / self employed.
I now pay the self employed contributions, and I have a full 35 year record of NI contributions / credits- I've got 36 years, However, I don't trust those Gov't b's not to move it to 40 years worth of contributions. I don't retire until May 2024.
I can relax slightly knowing I have 35 years covered, anyway.
Edit: Ah, the lower earnings exception for self employed people was abolished. I still have to pay my £2.80 a week National Insurance contributions for being self employed. Oh well.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0
