Buying new car at end of the month
I'm about to buy a new car and the dealer says the offer is only valid if registered before the end of the month.
With the new tax disc rules does this mean that dealers can no longer tax the vehicle with two weeks advance tax like they used to? Basically seems a pain to lose out on a whole months' tax on a brand new car.

When I bought a car last June, the dealer could still buy 12 months + a few days on a new car.0

I dont recall dealers ever being able to tax vehicles with two weeks advance tax?0 -
What "new tax disc rules"? There's been no change at all for three years.
The way the VED bands are calculated is changing, but not until the start of April, so won't affect a new car registered this month.
So I guess you mean the removal of the paper tax disc, and the automatic cancellation of tax on a keeper change - neither of which affect you at all.
Your car will be registered in February, so it will be taxed for February, since VED is calculated monthly. Just like it always has been for many, many decades.
So how much is one month's VED? If the car is in a band high enough to make one month's tax anything but utterly trivial, would you be better off waiting until April, all things considered, including depreciation?
BTW - you do realise 1st March is when 17 plates replace 66, right? Have you considered how this will affect depreciation in a few years?0 -
My point is that I haven't bought a new car for over three years, since the paper tax and inability to transfer unused tax from owner to owner changed. And for decades, at least when I last bought a new car, I was able to negotiate with the dealer that the tax STARTED from the 1st of the following month, not the previous. So my question is still... can dealers still tax new vehicles with time in hand, rather than wasting 26 days worth of tax?0

Neither of which is relevant. And for decades, at least when I last bought a new car, I was able to negotiate with the dealer that the tax STARTED from the 1st of the following month, not the previous. How much is one month's worth of tax, ignoring the first-year surcharge/discount?0 -

Looking at page 13 under question 3 "period of tax applied for" it shows here 12months and three weeks, so my decades old memory is crystal clear. Can I suggest that unless you know definitive answers that you leave the answers to people that DO know what they are talking about?0 -
If you bother to read on from that, you will read that those extra weeks are chargeable. Appendix R.0

If you bothered to read my last post I said that I was able to negotiate with the dealer that they started the tax from the next month.
They started it from the week of registration. Yes, you're right - I'd forgotten the DEOM wrinkle that means you only pay for the part of the month of registration. My apologies. But if you are registering it in February, you are paying for (part of) February.
But back to my earlier points - have you considered how well this deal stacks up over the expected life of your ownership, bearing in mind the depreciation influences of the imminent plate and VED banding changes?0 -
Yes, it's a commercial vehicle so the VED change on April 1st is irrelevant.
Thanks. Apology accepted.0
