laptop conundrum

Options
Ok, here is a problem for the tech minded folk.

How can I tell if a laptop is fine if there is no battery in it and I do not have a charger for that brand of laptop, without having to buy a battery or charger to see if it operates? :D

Found in a skip? What make/model is it?

In short you can't, the laptop could be in immaculate condition with not a mark on it but completely dead because the motherboard or another core component has failed. The only way to know if a laptop is fine is if it powers on and passes all the initial checks without error.

Tell us the make/model and we can search for a charger and/or battery.

Or you can use that data to look for yourself. Amazon is a good choice, there are several sources there. Ebay also, but I often find that Amazon is less expensive than Ebay for the same item.

Either way, get Googling! Your decision then. You can always Ebay it back as spares or repairs.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Depends on what you mean by FINE, as a paperweight maybe, but if you want to actually use it you will need a power source,

The low risk way to buy a universal charger from eBay for £10, you adjust the output voltage to the input voltage shown on the label of the Laptop.

It it powers up then fine, if not the universal charger can be used again in future.

If it does look ok you can invest in a battery.

If you google the model you might be able to figure out the voltage, but the label is safest as some laptops vary.

A lot of laptops will run without a battery installed, this is because unlike your phone, the "normal" state for a laptop, is for it to be plugged in via the power supply.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I found a lenovo thinkpad x200s at the local skip, complete except no battery.

Thanks EdwardB - that is what I was looking for - a universal laptop charger, will be able to find out if this laptop works and some of the other things I have salvaged.

    Thanks again.

You can do the search then. Amazon's cheapest result is £10; I dare not think what the cheapest is on Ebay...

Hard drive is in it - I tested it in my docking station - it works.

Power jack seems fine, but will not really know until I get a universal charger.

Screen connected, got wifi/ethernet and usb ports.
