Hi my relative wants to buy a SORN car. After he buys it and the seller sends off the logbook is the SORN automatically transferred to my relative the new buyer or does he has manually SORN it again?

If again does he SORN the car on the day of purchase or he waits for the updated logbook to come through the post then SORN it?

He will need to sorn it using the new keeper reference from the green new keeper slip. If you go online to the dvla site you can register the change of keeper online which gets you the new v5 within a week. Last time I did this I had my new v5 48 hours after purchase.

Ok then shall he wait for the full logbook to arrive then SORN it or will he get fined by DVLA for SORNing it after the date of sale transfer displayed on the logbook?

Basically when is the deadline to submit a SORN before a fine occurs?

I've never had a problem doing it when the V5C comes through in my name, even when that took a lot longer than the current few days (especially if the keeper change is done online).

SORN has expired on keeper change since it was introduced in the late '90s.

  • do the v5 thing online , mon- sat , https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle, you will have the v5 back a lot quicker , you and the seller get emails to say its been done
