buying used car - transfer private plate

I currently have car with private plate and are looking at buying a newer used car.

Would the dealer transfer the plate to the new car when I buy it and put a new plate on my existing car (I don't intend trading it in).

I've mislaid all my private plate paperwork, can they still do it without this or do I need to find it?

Not sure why you would expect a dealer to do this especially if you're not trading him anything to make a profit on.

Just buy the car and do it yourself.

Yes they would but they would charge you the £80 fee for it

Sounds like a lot of hassle and expense when the guys in the trade can probably do if far simpler and at far less expense than I could.

Whole purpose of using a dealer is it cuts out all the hassle.

Can it all be done on the same day?
    ie.
You get a lift into them in existing car, they put old cars plates on new car and new plates on old car and you drive away in both cars.

If I do just put it on a retainer before buying the new car how long does it take and how much time are you given before having to physically change the plates?

What paper work are you talking about? All you need is the V5C for your current car and the form from DLVA to transfer to the new car, or put it on retention.

Car dealers do not do the transfer, the DVLA do.

    I've just found it.
It's the original V750/1 I received when I bought the plate

Looks like only half of it though.

Would that be what the dealer used when I originally bought the car (I had it put on brand new car)

Is the bit I have retained unimportant now?
I think it is a DVLA receipt

Yes, you only need the upto date log book where the number plate is currently.
