Getting a valuation on some old books

Hello all!

I've been having a clearout and come across two quite-old books. One is a guide to card games, from 1933, the other a Road Map of Great Britain from 1958. I'm wondering if these would be worth anything.

Could my dear MSE brethren and sistren(!?) suggest what type of place I should take these to see if they're worth anything?

Thanks all :)

  • An antique bookshop would give a valuation but as someone who has sold hundreds of books on ebay id be surprised if you couldnt find their value online.
See if they are on ebay and go into advanced settings to see how much they sold for on ebay. Abebooks is an online bookshop that you could check the price on.

Amazon is also a good place to look, although don't be upset if you find they have no value. I had a job lot of old road maps of GB from the late 30s onwards, not one of them was worth a penny and they all went to the bargain bin at a charity shop.

With Amazon though you can't see a sales history, but a good indication as to whether or not it is likely to sell is the ranking number, anything over a million probably means it has never sold at all.

Advice above is quite good. You can also try Googling the ISBN numbers.
My guess would be the road atlas book was fairly worthless, unless unique in some way, the card game book sounds interesting.

I've got a movie stills book that was my grandpa's, it's from mid 1920s. I thought it was a great find, it's in tip top condition and really interesting, I searched it and could buy one for £2 delivered.

Which was already mentioned in post #2 above - and is, of course, owned by Amazon.

When looking for particular books I've come across listings on abebooks that seem to hugely overvalue them. I'm not sure it's a good place to get an idea of ta book's value.

That's true, it shows listed value not sold value. I used to sell a lot of military books and once came across one that went into 4 figures on Abe. I had it listed on Amazon for years and years dropping the price every month or two, then I tried ebay and it eventually went after about a year on ebay for £28 :(

I was a tad disappointed but actually pleased to get shot of it as after 10 years or so you get bored with moving the same books around.

  • There are just too many road maps on the market. The card game book seems more promising, but it's unlikely to give the reader any new information. It's two books out of millions, Wings.
