Hi there,
I've had an assessment with local Occupational therapist and they have called to say the panel have agreed I need a stair lift. So, I am waiting for someone to call to come over and do a financial assessment for a disabled facilities grant.
To put it bluntly. I need a stair lift so that I have better access to both floors of our little house. I'm not able to work right now and my husband has a modest wage working full time for a charity...... so I am wondering what this means test will be.
Does anyone know how they test? I know they "disregard first £6000 of savings"....but as we have no savings I am wondering if it is based on husbands income for example. Anyone have an advice or experience?
Thanks

They asked if I had savings over £23000. They talked about what other income was coming into the home. At the end they said that I was entitled with no contribution from us at all.
Next thing was someone rang to say that they had been contacted to send a carer round to help wash me etc which I turned down, then the 'handyman service' rang saying that they had been brought on board by Social Services to make adaptions to the home which I also refused. The way that they were talking they were trying to turn our lovely home into something akin to an Old Folks care home!0 -
Sounds hopeful.... I've just had first shower with handrails... What a life saver!
Hoping for help with stair lift...0 -

From what I understand..
There are slight differences in how counties carry out the 'financial contribution' assessments.
You may find some info on the council website. It is ok to ask them for a copy of their policy.
Also ask them how long the waiting list is.. some areas move fast others are overwhelmed and go slowly.
After the assesment if the contribution is more than you are comfortable with have a look a second hand stair lifts.. my friend has picked some up for a few pounds on ebay and paid a handyman to take out and refit although this comes with risks.
When I had a grant for my wetroom in 2012 I was single. I was told if i were recieving income related benefits there would be no charge. But this may have changed now.0
