Free life Assurance if child under 4

Hi all,

Don't know if this in right place but when I was in Post Office the other day it said that you can get free life assurance for a year if have a child under 4. Though it may be worth investigating if you fall into that category.

    Free for upto 12 months.

  • Yep - it is all here > http://www.postoffice.co.uk/life-cover/free-parent-life-cover

You get £15k of cover per parent per child under 4. Free for one year.

The best bit is how they felt the need to limit it to a maximum of 8 children under 4! So I think medically speaking that means they wish to exclude cover for one child for those families who have managed to have 3 sets of triplets within 3 years! You could not make this up!

But in case this is you and you hit the jackpot of 8 kids aged 3 and under- "And if two parents have the maximum eight children and each take out a policy, that's £120,000 of cover each."

Of course, this amount of cover may help, but it does in simple maths terms represent just over £2,000 per child for each year until they are 18 (assuming both parents die and were insured). Not quite enough cover perhaps ...
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.

Tricky for a woman to have that many children, but fairly easy for a bloke. Especially as the terms just require you to be named on the birth certificate - not to actually be in an ongoing relationship with the child or it's mother...

(OK, probably the sort of bloke who has nine kids by eight different mothers isn't going to be the sort of bloke who is diligent about making sure he has adequate life cover for them all, but just in case...)

Obviously £15K is nowhere near enough cover but I've signed up anyway on the grounds that it can't hurt to have an extra £15K of cover on top of my other policies - my wife will be better off having it than not having it should I die.

Agreed - he has got to achieve this in 3 years thought to be able to insure 8 (as all must be under 4). Medically possible as you say. He cannot insure 9...

Agreed - free cover can't hurt. But assuming average age of becoming a parent) - you have got around £6 worth of life cover in exchange for your details; so they can try to upgrade / market to you. That is cost effective for them vs buying warmish leads and if you need the cover it is for you. The time to apply has to be deducted from that value too. But, free is free :-) so very MSE!
