Summer Holiday in and around New York??

I'm not quite sure exactly what I'm looking for but hoping for some ideas an a point in the right direction of where to start

My partner has tickets for a U2 gig in New York at the end of June , round about the time we would normally go on holiday with the kids.

Initially he wanted us just to go for a few days , fly in one day, gig the next an then fly home the following day. He's been to New York a few times but I've never been I would like to spend more time there however I don't have anyone to watch the kids and I wouldn't leave them at home anyway.

So could we make New York our summer holiday, and dip in and out of the touristy things

Things that I need to figure out an some
Ideas and info I have so far

Kids are 8&13
School finishes 22 June
Concert 28th June
Flying from Glasgow

Beach
Water sports
Summer holiday activities

Holiday somewhere a short flight away from New York and just fly, drive, train in for the night of the concert
Hotel with childminding service or other alternative for the night of the concert

Split holiday 7 days somewhere not too far away then stay in NY for 5-7 days

We went to florida last year for 11 days An basically just did Disney
Florida this year but not Disney so maybe the keys, tampa, Daytona or????? Then travel to NY

Do NY first then holiday ?

I've been desperate to go to Miami, would this be a holiday for the kids ???

Budget ideally save where possible but should have the money available to pay when extras are needed or when it would be worthwhile to splash the cash on something.
(we will be carbooting a garage and loft full of stuff to give us some extra cash for splurges )

I have so many questions and ideas an have sat down to try and get a rough plan, but start reading reviews about this place or start looking at hotels or google, omg I just loose so much time google'in
I need to narrow things down to a rough plan , we only started talking about this during the week but I'm totally overwhelmed by how much organising it may need

And then question is where to start ...... ok I do apologise I've kinda went full circle I think... see my heads mush:D

Please help
My sanity is in desperate need of your help

There's some lovely coast north of NYC for a beach holiday at that time of year. Miami will be very hot and very sticky.

Don't forget 4th July is a holiday with peaks in demand around it.

5 nights in NYC is too long for an 8 year old.

JetBlue has many domestic flights from NYC to the Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine coast.

  • Thanks for reply, I was thinking 5 days so we can spread it out for her an it's not manic trying to fit it all in
Was thinking slow and steady and hopefully there will be no grumps.

1 day for liberty an Ellis island and surrounding etc (oldest daughter is called Ellys an she has a ticket stub my sister gave her from there about 11 years ago, she's wanted to go ever since )

1 day shopping and all the "shop" hotspots / touristy places

Take in a show of some sort another day

1 day exploring , Central Park, the zoo, Rockerfeller, Times Square etc etc

I have been to NYC at the end of June and it's very hot and sticky, the air in the subway can get very hot with the odd blast of very very hot air.
It's really not easy doing touristy things in such heat.

A good starting point is researching the best place to stay in NY with a child minding service and how easy you would get back there after the U2 concert. I'm guessing child minding has extra costs for the service after 11pm.

OP, why not fly to NY for a couple of days and go to the concert, and then take a cruise from New York around the Caribbean? The kids would love that.
Alternatively you can find 100's of things around that area to do. Take a trip to Seaside, NJ or Atlantic CIty, Niagara Falls is a great day out. Not to mention all the things to do in Manhattan, which can take a few days with kids.
We spent a day walking through Central Park going to the zoo and the Natural History Museum. Nice easy day with no rush.

A great place to stay is Best Western Hospitality House which is an apartment hotel, so you have kitchen, dinning room lounge too, much nicer/better than staying in a hotel and its in a decent position too.
  • Hire a car spend a few relaxing days at Cape May doing the beach stuff it's 2hrs drive from NYC and a fantastic place

    Sixth Anniversary
Maybe include Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, in the Appalachian Mountains about 75 miles west of Washington DC.

    Get driving!
  • Yes.... I'm really liking the idea of a cruise

Thanks for the tip about the apartment. , I'll look into that
I would prefer something like that so we can eat an prepare food either breakfast before going out or taking packed lunches with us

Thanks for the suggestions , more food for thought
My list of ideas is getting bigger

Have no objections to hiring a car so yes peaceful waters , driving opens up so many options (maybe too many if I'm honest, I'm really indecisive )

    Niagara falls ... Yes

John, I've saved that site to look at later

Prenton Cape May sounds really nice
