Remote opening problem (solved)

My wife found her fob wouldn't open the car. She didn't want to use mine as there were too many keys on it so I told her to open the door with the key. Meanwhile I ordered a couple of batteries on eBay and swapped the batteries. Now neither fob remote opening works. Checked internet and found the requirement to re-pair (turn on ignition. Press open on fob for a few seconds. Turn off.)
I have checked the batteries are good and tried re-pariring several times but still have to open/close on key. Central locking does work.
I'm annoyed with myself that I never checked my fob before replacing the battery but what's done is done.
My conclusion is there must be some fault in the car itself but there are far too many google hits about re-pairing to be able to dig deeper without an awful lot of effort. I checked the fuse list on the very remote off chance of one for this function but don't see anything.
So - anybody any other suggestions please that don't involve having my wallet emptied by a main dealer.

Did you see this solution which involves disconnecting the car battery?
It does seem a lot of palaver just to change the key batteries.0 -
I probably did but thought it was a lot of palaver
It had been like this a couple of weeks and posting this prompted me to revisit the key fobs.
I lightly bent the side battery connector pins in to make sure of good contact and the spring connectors up a tad and then pushed the fob back together. After re-pairing my key worked.
My wifes still didn't so I went through the same procedure and after pairing that one worked too.
Seems that the battery connections are a bit naff - maybe if I'd dug deep enough I may have found a mention of that. At least it's documented here now though.0 -

Thank you sharing this solution, one of our keys had stopped working remotely other than the middle tailgate release button. Tried your solution with bending the connection tabs up and it now works perfectly. I did not need to pair the key back to the car. I wonder how many of the keys that get replaced or sent for repair just needed this simple 2 minute diy fix.
