Low income and HB/CTB

Hi, I am starting to build a new business and obviously have a low income at the start, can I claim HB and CTB? How would I go about claiming, as I have no proof of income at present?

  • You can claim HB & CTS based on nil income. Many do it when they fail the ESA claim. They just tell the council that they now get no income.

My Council asks the newly self employed for a projection of their income - we use this for 13 weeks.

After 13 weeks we ask for income and expenditure for the past 3 months - we then use these figures for the next 13 weeks.

After a further 13 weeks we do the same.

And after another 13 weeks we do the same.

After 1 full years trading we ask for 52 weeks self employed figures - we then calculate the next 52 weeks Housing Beneift using these figures.

Once trading for a few years we then start asking for yearly self employed accounts.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

Do they do that for both benefits?
